Why Kinship

What a smaller, local agency does differently

There are good caregivers working at large franchise agencies. The difference is rarely the person who turns up — it is what the organisation behind them is built to do quickly, and what it is not.

Most home care in Metro Vancouver is delivered through franchises: a national or international brand, a regional licensee, and a scheduling system designed to work the same way in every territory. That model has real strengths. Consistency of paperwork is one. Speed of decision is not.

Kinship is independently owned and run from Surrey. Below are the four differences families actually notice — set out honestly, including where the difference comes from.

How quickly care can start

A large franchise

An enquiry goes through a corporate intake process — a call centre, an assessment queue, a regional office. Even when everyone is willing, the structure adds days.

Kinship

We can often start the same day, and usually within 24 hours. Hospital discharges are the call we are set up to answer fastest.

Why: The person you speak to is the person who decides. There is no queue to reach the decision, because the owner is on the first call.

Appointment support

A large franchise

Transport is commonly scheduled as a drive. Your parent is dropped at the kerb, goes in alone, and is collected afterwards.

Kinship

We park, walk in with them, check them in at the desk, and wait with them — in the waiting room, alongside them — then walk them back out.

Why: We book the whole appointment as one block rather than two short trips, so nobody is being rushed on to their next call.

How families are kept informed

A large franchise

A paper logbook left on the kitchen counter. It works well if you are in the house. It works badly if you live in Calgary and are trying to find out how Tuesday went.

Kinship

Updates go to your phone after the visit. You do not have to be in the house, and you do not have to chase us for them.

Why: Most of the families we work with have an adult child managing things from another city. The logbook was designed for a household where somebody is always home.

Who owns and answers

A large franchise

A call centre, often outside your region, working from a scheduling system rather than knowledge of your street.

Kinship

A local owner who answers the phone, and caregivers who live minutes from the families they visit.

Why: Kinship is Surrey-owned and deliberately small. The owner personally interviews every caregiver, so when she says she knows who is coming to your door, she means it literally.

The honest version

A larger agency will usually have more caregivers on its books than we do, and there will be weeks when that matters — an unusual schedule, or a very specific requirement we cannot cover.

What we offer instead is a small roster, a service area we can genuinely reach, and decisions made by the person who answers the phone. If that is not the right trade for your family, we will tell you so on the first call.

Ask us the awkward questions

How quickly can you actually start? Who exactly would be coming? What happens when they are on holiday? Those are the right questions, and we would rather answer them now than after you have booked.

Phones answered 24/7, including evenings and weekends.
